South Pacific: Tropical Romance, Opera Legends & "Carefully Taught" Truths

"Some enchanted evening, you may see a stranger..." Pack your sunhats and step onto the golden sands of the 1940s Pacific! This week on Musical Lyrical Lingo, we are setting sail for the lush, tropical paradise of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Pulitzer Prize–winning masterpiece, South Pacific.

Beneath its paradise aesthetic and sweep-you-off-your-feet melodies lies one of the most courageously progressive scores in Golden Age Broadway history. How did a story about WWII soldiers and island romance tackle deep-seated racial prejudice head-on in 1949—and why did Rodgers & Hammerstein fight so fiercely to keep its most controversial song in the show?

Join us as we explore the history, the 1000+ live stage hair washes, and the timeless power of this monumental classic.

"I'm in love with a wonderful guy!"

In this episode, we dissect:

• The Genius of the Score: How Rodgers tailored operatic baselines for Ezio Pinza in "Some Enchanted Evening" and gave us the ultimate stubborn-optimist anthem with "A Cockeyed Optimist."
• "You've Got to Be Carefully Taught": Why this 60-second song remains one of the most potent, brilliant lyrics Oscar Hammerstein II ever wrote about how hatred is passed down through generations.
• Tony Record-Breakers & Unsung Trailblazers: Celebrating Juanita Hall’s historic Tony win as Bloody Mary and the record-breaking clean sweep that cemented this show in theatre history.

Whether you grew up singing along to "Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" or are discovering the deep complexity of this classic for the first time, pour a tropical drink, settle in, and join us for the dive!
